Native Orchids of the South West of WA

The south-west of Western Australia is home to over 400 species of native orchids, making it one of the world’s richest orchid regions. These orchids display remarkable diversity and adaptation, ranging from the striking Spider Orchids and Donkey Orchids to the unique Hammer and Flying Duck Orchids. Many species rely on specific pollinators and fungi for survival, often occurring in small, localised populations within forests, woodlands, and heathlands. Flowering mainly in spring, they contribute to the region’s renowned wildflower displays, though habitat loss and environmental change threaten several rare and endemic species.
