Fungi Workshop
On the 20th of June Southern Forests Community Landcare hosted a very informative fungi workshop that was presented by Julie Fielder, a local expert mycologist. This workshop is part of the Knowing, Caring and Sharing your Bushland Project and is supported by funding from the Western Australian Government’s State NRM.
Julie gave us an excellent introduction into the importance of fungi in our soils for both natural and farming situations. We were shown the features of fungi that are used to identify them. The gills underneath and how parts are connected to the stem are very critical to accurate identification. Julie demonstrated how to use a small mirror to photograph the parts underneath the mushroom without causing damage to it, which was then put into practice hunting for fungi around Manjimup Heritage Park where both native and introduced fungi where discovered.
Be on the look out for the next workshop in the Knowing, Caring and Sharing Bushland Project series, ‘Building a Firewise Garden’.
