SMART Parasite Control Using AI and IPM

Southern Forests Community Landcare is aware that our regions producers are farming in areas mostly consisting of summer flats with green pasture and higher soil moisture conditions, more so than many other regions in our state; this is paradise for parasites. For this reason, we ran a SMART Parasite Control using AI and IPM workshop for our producers.  It is important that our farming community has access to the best and most current information regarding livestock parasites, testing opportunities and IPM strategies available to them as well as knowing their worm egg count thresholds, active ingredients in chemical pesticides and the off-target effects of that chemical and drench effectiveness. Just as importantly is knowing the benefits to dung beetles and other soil organisms when choosing more ‘dung beetle friendly’ drench chemicals. Our workshop not only covered these topics but also offered free AI FECPAK testing of livestock manure to determine their worm egg counts. Thankyou to the farmers who attended our workshop; from all feedback, it was very useful to them and has put parasite control back into their hands. It is so important to count before you drench and then re-count your worm eggs 10 to 14 days after drenching; you may find that you don’t even need to drench at all. If you missed out on the workshop, SFCL will be breaking out its fantastic little AI FECPAK worm egg counting tool again on June 11^th and invite all producers to drop manure samples in for free testing.
